Chapter Eleven
âHere.â I set the glass of orange juice on the table in front of Helixâs head. He lifts it from where he rests it on his arms. Dark circles ring his eyes, and he squints up at me. Around us, the dining hall is crowded. Itâs our day off, apparently, and Iâm not the only one who wants to spend it eating.
âWhatâs this?â Helix frowns at the juice.
âMy mom always said O.J. was the best cure for a hangover,â I explain.
âYour mom talked to you about hangovers?â Bekah asks as she sits down. Her plate is piled high with pancakes. The lack of syrup has me judging her though.
âOf course. Yours didnât?â I ask.
She snorts. âMy parents talked of battle strategy and the easiest ways to kill a man with your bare hands.â
I shrug. âCould double as relationship advice, too.â
She laughs as she digs into her food.
âNo syrup?â I canât help but ask.
She glances at me. âI donât like sweets.â
I stare at her, frozen in horror.
After a moment, Bekah lowers her fork. âUh. You okay?â she asks.
Kol claps me on the back. âShe might be having a heart attack,â he says. âI canât feel a pulse.â
His hand jars me, and I blink, gaping at Bekah.
âGorgeous, tireless, lethal, and you donât like sweets,â I say with a shake of my head. âI knew it. Youâre an alien.â
Bekah grins. âIf by alien you mean a foreign being, not from Earth, then yes, I am.â
Ank rolls his eyes, smiling at Bekah who doesnât bother to notice.
So far, all my attempts to question her about him have been fruitless. Sheâs been either absent from our shared room or already asleep. Tonight, I make a mental note. Iâm going to corner her.
âSo, what are you crazy kids doing with your day off?â Bekah asks.
I feel Kol and Helix both looking at me, and any attempts at nonchalance on my part dry up instantly.
âAh,â Bekah says, and her expression is so knowing that I stick out my tongue.
âActually,â I say, pointedly ignoring the way both Kol and Helix inch closer to me. âI was thinking Bekah and I would have a girlsâ day.â
Kol and Helix lean away again.
I swallow a smile and look at Bekah. âYou up for that?â
âDepends. Are we going to paint each otherâs nails and have pillow fights?â
âIs that what you want?â
âNot unless itâs war paint and the pillows are battle axes,â she says.
I laugh. âWe can do whatever you want.â
Her eyes gleam. âWeapons shopping?â
âDeal.â
Her eyes narrow. âIs this a trick? Are you trying to add me to your harem? Because youâre hot, Elidi, but I donât think you have the right parts for what Iâm looking for.â
âJust eat your pancakes,â I tell her.
She flashes me a smile and makes a big production of her next bite.
When the mealâs over, we all file outside.
Kol and Helix hover, but I donât even give them a chance to voice what is obviously going to be a team-up against the idea of leaving me alone.
âGuys, Iâll be fine,â I say.
