Chapter Eleven

“Here.” I set the glass of orange juice on the table in front of Helix’s head. He lifts it from where he rests it on his arms. Dark circles ring his eyes, and he squints up at me. Around us, the dining hall is crowded. It’s our day off, apparently, and I’m not the only one who wants to spend it eating.

“What’s this?” Helix frowns at the juice.

“My mom always said O.J. was the best cure for a hangover,” I explain.

“Your mom talked to you about hangovers?” Bekah asks as she sits down. Her plate is piled high with pancakes. The lack of syrup has me judging her though.

“Of course. Yours didn’t?” I ask.

She snorts. “My parents talked of battle strategy and the easiest ways to kill a man with your bare hands.”

I shrug. “Could double as relationship advice, too.”

She laughs as she digs into her food.

“No syrup?” I can’t help but ask.

She glances at me. “I don’t like sweets.”

I stare at her, frozen in horror.

After a moment, Bekah lowers her fork. “Uh. You okay?” she asks.

Kol claps me on the back. “She might be having a heart attack,” he says. “I can’t feel a pulse.”

His hand jars me, and I blink, gaping at Bekah.

“Gorgeous, tireless, lethal, and you don’t like sweets,” I say with a shake of my head. “I knew it. You’re an alien.”

Bekah grins. “If by alien you mean a foreign being, not from Earth, then yes, I am.”

Ank rolls his eyes, smiling at Bekah who doesn’t bother to notice.

So far, all my attempts to question her about him have been fruitless. She’s been either absent from our shared room or already asleep. Tonight, I make a mental note. I’m going to corner her.

“So, what are you crazy kids doing with your day off?” Bekah asks.

I feel Kol and Helix both looking at me, and any attempts at nonchalance on my part dry up instantly.

“Ah,” Bekah says, and her expression is so knowing that I stick out my tongue.

“Actually,” I say, pointedly ignoring the way both Kol and Helix inch closer to me. “I was thinking Bekah and I would have a girls’ day.”

Kol and Helix lean away again.

I swallow a smile and look at Bekah. “You up for that?”

“Depends. Are we going to paint each other’s nails and have pillow fights?”

“Is that what you want?”

“Not unless it’s war paint and the pillows are battle axes,” she says.

I laugh. “We can do whatever you want.”

Her eyes gleam. “Weapons shopping?”

“Deal.”

Her eyes narrow. “Is this a trick? Are you trying to add me to your harem? Because you’re hot, Elidi, but I don’t think you have the right parts for what I’m looking for.”

“Just eat your pancakes,” I tell her.

She flashes me a smile and makes a big production of her next bite.

When the meal’s over, we all file outside.

Kol and Helix hover, but I don’t even give them a chance to voice what is obviously going to be a team-up against the idea of leaving me alone.

“Guys, I’ll be fine,” I say.
